ORC: Wk 3 There’s No Place Like Home Bathroom 1

So the last week has been a busy one. Unfortunately we were gone over the weekend so I feel like we didn’t’ get anything major done but we have gotten a couple things done (I never give myself enough credit). In case you are just tuning in my husband and I just bought a house on March 6th, moved in on March 13th – so this week marjked our one month in the house. We dove right into our first bathroom complete gut job, because it was gross…

See I warned you – gross.

Weekly Plan:

Wk 1: Gut Bathroom/Move around plumbing – finish ordering all supplies — DONE!

Wk 2: Remove wallpaper/sand window trim — DONE!

Wk 3: Electrical — DONE!

Wk 4: Tile/Wall off the old Door

Wk 5: Install Vanity, Shower Glass, Countertop

Wk 6: Last minute finishes

Above is where we were last week.

So the two big things we did this week were level out the floor in preparation for the tile and scrape wallpaper.

I couldn’t believe how the wallpaper came off. My husband did the scraping (actually he has been doing pretty much all of the demo). He used fabric softener to remove it. Once it was wet it came off just by scrapping.

So in the next week – my fingers are crossed that the tile gets here by Friday so we can tile this weekend. Hopefully we will start having some pretty pics next week!

Be sure to check out all the participants here.

ok! week two! If you haven’t seen my week one, you can catch up here. So in the last week I feel we got a lot accomplished. Plumbing done – check! Electrical done – check! Bathroom completely gutted down to studs – check! All final fixtures and supplies ordered check!

Like I mentioned before I decided to go with brushed gold fixtures. So here are the pieces I picked out from the Purist Kohler Collection.

Kohler Purist Faucet in Brushed Gold

Kohler Purist Showerhead in Brushed Gold

Kohler Purist Lever Handle Brushed Gold

I think they are super pretty – can’t wait to get them!

So in the next week the plan is to fully prep for the tile. One potential problem of completing the challenge as I see it could be – when I first started not everything was already ordered. And based on lead times it might end up putting a damper on our pace. But we will do what we can see and see how far we get. The tile won’t be here until the 14-20 of April so that leaves not many weeks to get the tile installed, which we will be doing, install the vanity, get the counter top people here and the glass people. Yikes! So we will see. The biggest challenge I think will be the glass people. I have an estimate with a couple companies, but I am learning that they can’t give a final estimate with proper measurements until the tile is fully installed and then it is a 2 week lead time to get the glass installed. So that could end up being a tight installation with our short time frame. So we will see!

Can’t get too worked up worrying about that – one step at a time! So as far as the next week we are going to do everything we can just to prep for the tile to ensure the minute the tile gets here my husband and I can get going!

Project: Lacquered Dresser Experiment

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was good – more working on the house. I was pumped because I scored the below dresser at a local consignment shop. I was scouting out for a new dresser because the one we used in our condo in our master bedroom was just a little too small (it was actually a buffet my grandmother refinished). So Friday night I was searing craigslist and my husband actually found a different dresser, and upon scouting it out I found a whole new consignment shop I hadn’t been to – it was awesome! Lots of goodies, but this one came home with me!!!

So my mission on this project is to try and lacquer it. For those of you following my ORC, you will know that we are re-doing the master bathroom and I am having a custom vanity made lacquered in an orangery/cherry red color. So I decided to try and make them match. I have re-finished many a peice of furniture before, however whenever I try to do something in the high gloss it is never that lacquered look that I really want. So I am goign to give it a whirl – any words of wisdom or encouragement is much appreciated!

One Room Challenge: Little Yellow House Bathroom #1

So – this is the first time I am participating in One Room Challenge and I am super pumped. I have followed along on past challenges, but since living downtown in a small condo I never had an opportunity to get my hands dirty on a project. Until – my husband and I bought a little yellow ranch just north of downtown Milwaukee. We looked at houses for a long time to find one that was right for us. We knew we wanted a fixer-upper (mainly because I am too much a brat and wanted to update the house MY way). However we knew it was our first time taking on a project like this so we needed to make sure the house had good bones, and wasn’t too overwhelming.

Now we have been living here for about 3 weeks and we are ready to dive into the first bathroom. It needs a LOT of love….

As you can see there are a couple things going on in this bathroom.

1. It’s pretty small so we have to use the space well

2. It is a walk thru – with doors on each end of the bathroom – making the space kinda awkward to use. Plan is to remove the door that opens to the front hallway – making the only entrance to the master bedroom

3. By walling-off the door it will allow us to swing the vanity to the wall the door is currently on giving more counter space to the vanity.

4. Obviously it is a total gut job – I mean it is literally gross (seriously look at the floor by the toilet yuck!).

5. The shower is a slightly newer update to the rest of the house, but when you go inside it feels like a cave. Here we will be ripping down all the tile and making the wall more of a half wall and then doing glass doors on each side. Kinda like the below inspiration.

6. Also – there are 3 layers of wallpaper to remove on the walls – you have to appreciate that they love wallpaper as much as I do, at least I will have to remind myself that when I am scrapping it off

I have been looking at a lot of inspiration since we got an accepted offer on the house, we knew we would have to dive into this project right away.

Orange Cabinet Inspiration – bd home design + interior

I LOVE the above orange cabinets. First off – I love all brightly colored lacquered goodness. Since the bathroom is so small I want to make an impact with the vanity – I mean who wouldn’t want to start the day getting ready in such a cheery space. I am going back and forth between orange and a cherry/orange red.

Then I will keep the rest of the space more low key is simple white + gold everything. Here is what I am thinking for the accessories.

Pier One Mirror: So I am in love with this mirror. I saw it a bit ago and thought it would be perfect in my spunky bathroom – and call me crazy but I didn’t think the price was too bad either!

Shades of Light Sconce: Since I have such an intricate mirror I wanted to be sure the sconces were a lot more sleek and simple so I thought these were a good choice – but instead of the silver that is pictured they will be gold

Cabinet Knobs: I like these sleek gold ones

Tile: my sister is an interior designer so she is hooking me up with this fun stuff

Weekly Plan:

Wk 1: Gut Bathroom/Move around plumbing – finish ordering all supplies

Wk 2: Remove wallpaper/sand window trim

Wk 3: Electrical

Wk 4: Tile/Wall off the old Door

Wk 5: Install Vanity, Shower Glass, Countertop

Wk 6: Last minute finishes

Now, honestly I have no idea if we are going to be able to pull this off in 6 weeks – mainly b/c I am not 100% sure when we will be able to get our electrician (my cousin) to come to the house to finish that step. So wish us luck as we try to tackle our first project in the new house! Even if we don’t get it done in the 6 weeks we will try our best!

Cauliflower Soup Goodness

In attempt to eat healthier at work I have been making a lot of healthy vegetable soups lately. And one of my new favorites is this cauliflower soup. I love creamy soups but we all know that our waist lines don’t – but this soup gives you that creamy comfort food quality without the calories.

Creamy Cauliflower Soup

Now this weekend was the second time I made it and I made a few tweaks. The first time I thought it was a little runnier than I would like. So this time I doubled all the veggies (cauliflower, onion, garlic) and held the amount of chicken broth which was perfect. It made the soup just that tad bit more creamy instead of runny. At first when I chopped all the cauliflower and put in the pot with the broth the broth didn’t cover all the cauliflower (I thought maybe I was over-zealous in my veggie quantity), but after everything started simmering and cooking down it ended up being perfect.

Give it a whirl! Here are a couple of the other soups that have been in my kitchen lately (they all freeze super well! So I make big batches and freeze them in individual containers and just pop one out the night before for lunches the next day!)
